Jigsaw PSHE & RSE

We understand that the last year has been challenging for a number of people and at school we are here to help.

Below are links to the NSPCC and Place2Be.

As well as providing information on Children's Mental Health they can also signpost you to places outside of school that you can get help.

Intent

At Great Wishford C of E Primary School, our intent for 'Personal, Social and Health Education' is that it will promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of the children in our care, allowing them to reach their unique potential. This will be achieved through providing opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.  In this way, the children will develop the qualities and attributes that they will need to flourish as individuals, family members and members of modern British society.  We will deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach with its strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health . PSHE lessons will also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Implementation

As part of our broad and balanced curriculum we:

  • promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils.
  • prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences, both now and in future life.
  • promote British Values - democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.

What will my child learn?

We follow a programme called 'Jigsaw'.  There are six half-term units of work, each with six lessons.  Each class studies the same topic at the same time, allowing for whole school themes and celebrations.  Our PSHE approach includes 'mindfulness' activities which helps the children understand their own individual needs which in turn supports their well being and mental health.  The Jigsaw scheme also incorporates the RSE policy.

  • Being me in my World covers a wide range of topics, including a sense of belonging, welcoming others and being part of a community - school, village, local area, national and global.
  • Celebrating Difference focuses in similarities and differences and teaches about diversity, such as disability, racism, power, friendships and conflict.  Children learn to accept everyone's right to 'difference'.  We also learn about the concept of bullying - what it is and what is isn't, including cyber and homophobic bullying.
  • Dreams and Goals encourages children to think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, what personal strengths are and how to overcome challenges. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment, success and they have the opportunity to share their aspirations and their dreams for the world.
  • Healthy Me covers physical health (eating, activity, rest & relaxation, drugs, alcohol, keeping safe) and also has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, empowering children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these.
  • Relationships has a wide focus looking at diverse topics such as families, friendships, pets & animals, love & loss. A vital part of this unit is about safeguarding and keeping children safe; this links to cyber safety and social networking, as well as attraction and assertiveness. Children will learn how to deal with conflict, their own strengths and self-esteem.  They will have the chance to explore roles and responsibilities in families and to learn about stereotypes.  All lessons are delivered in an age appropriate way.
  • Changing Me deals with changes of many types from growing from young to old, becoming a teenager, assertiveness, self-respect and safeguarding.  Self and body image, puberty, attraction and accepting change are diverse subjects for children to explore.  Life cycles and how babies are made and grow are treated sensitively and are designed  to meet children's needs.  All year groups learn about how people and bodies change.

Impact

Through PSHE our children will be allowed to experience a sense of belonging and community, and understand that every individual is valued.  Our school core Christian values are discussed hand in hand with PSHE allowing our children to base positive life choices on knowledge learned so they can become valuable and respectful British citizens in their future education and adult life.  Our children will have the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and will be prepared for life and work in modern Britain.
